Georgetown's thirty-five acre Nature Area was established by individuals who understand that what is really interesting to young students is what they can directly touch, see and explore for themselves. The trails and original programs were designed to foster "real" learning experiences, to supplement the necessary but often excessive vicarious learning that accounts for most of the child's schooling. In addition to learning principles of science, children can learn much about how to conduct investigations, solve problems, and make decisions through studies in the out-of-doors. As well, they may develop more curiosity, a better attitude about learning, and a healthier respect for the environment.
